Judey is a pre-war illustration, one of the first children of inspiration. It came from a real-life story which I’m about to tell.
In a small town, there lived two girls named Sarah and Lily. They were best friends, and they did everything together. They would spend long afternoons in the park, playing games and telling each other stories.
One day, Sarah’s family received some bad news. Her father had been diagnosed with a serious illness, and he would need to spend several weeks in the hospital. Sarah was devastated, and she didn’t know how to cope with the sudden change in her life.
Lily, being the good friend that she was, decided to help Sarah through this difficult time. She would visit Sarah’s house every day after school, bringing her favorite treats and telling her funny stories to make her laugh.
As the days turned into weeks, Sarah began to feel better. She was still worried about her father, but she had also realized how lucky she was to have a friend like Lily. She had always known that Lily was kind and caring, but she had never fully appreciated how much Lily had been there for her until now.
One day, as they were walking home from school, Sarah turned to Lily and said, “Thank you for being such a good friend to me. I don’t know what I would do without you.”
Lily smiled and replied, “That’s what friends are for. You would do the same for me. I don’t want to be left when I need your support most”.
Sarah nodded, but deep inside felt like something was wrong. Is Lily there for her only because she expects the same back? Does Sarah owe anything to her for the support she got? It felt like that.
Days passed and Sarah couldn’t help but watch her friend and wondered if their friendship was real, or was it chocolate-covered lies. Once she could no longer keep her thoughts inside she asked Lily if she truly enjoyed spending time with her, Sarah. “Sure”, answered Lily with surprise in her voice.
“But you must get tired of visiting me every day and trying to cheer me up. Wasn’t there at least one day when you felt like not coming here and have some fun elsewhere?”
“Sure”, answered Sarah again without even thinking.
“…But you still come because you expect the same from me, in case you ever need it?”, asked Sarah carefully.
“Well…”, this time Sarah seemed to take her time and reflect. “Of course I’ll need it. There’s no “if” here. Life is not always bright for anybody. And I want to know there’s a chance I’ll have a friend by my side. I want it to be you because I like you. I enjoy spending time with you.”
“How hard can it be to be there for you,” Lily started feeling seized with emotion. “If now I feel like I’m in your debt. I feel like I’m trapped. I like you, you’re my best friend. You’ve proven to be a fantastic and loyal friend to me too. But I never thought you’d expect anything from me like I bought your time and positive energy for a future return.”
“Oh Sarah. We all have expectations. You want me to be there for you without any ulterior motive, as if any ulterior motive can change what I feel about you and how fun I have spending time with you. But during all these months you never tried to be there for me. To cheer me up or come to me – do you need a reason for that? Here’s a good reason: my friend Sarah is in a depression and it has made me sad. Hey, let’s appreciate what we have now. I’ve been here for you and it’s all that matters”
Sarah was speechless for a long moment. She realised something very important. Lily was right. We can look at things differently and mix up the reality. But the reality is simple: actions speak louder than words.
